FODMAP

I saw my doctor with three things... Sort of like my car -- when there are three things, it's time to take it to the shop.  One of the things was the ongoing weight struggle... Ovempic is scarce and TBH, I'd rather not.  But I was told about the non-FODMAP eating plan.  Here's a flyer:

https://www.dietvsdisease.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/DD-FODMAP-Food-List-flyer-3-page.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0YC74ZXiNHP2T7xFeH7wZEGbqKrCYxTqhTHDDqPuJHczEVZm7uZt8w7nQ

It's basically gluten free but also no onions or garlic, apples or bananas, milk, beans or hummus.

I can have all the Shrimp Paste I want!  WTH is shrimp paste?  I had a huge fit of the giggles in the grocery store as I had the food list in hand and saw that.

Certain vegetables, fruit and most meat is all fine.  Some other things are okay in moderation.  But eating this way is likely to induce weight loss as well as gut health (the point) just because finding something that's okay to eat will be so much harder.

Oh, and try to be vegan... REALLY creative.

The doctor prescribed visiting the nutritionist... First available?  Two MONTHS+.  I took it.  By then, I might be an expert just by doing it on my own.

Here's a blog of recipes that comply:

BTW, FODMAP is an acronym for Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, and Monosaccharides and Polyols.

This is an elimination diet -- so not meant to be permanent.  Lots of FODMAP-high foods are healthy, but the point is to figure out what's going on with your gut and intestines.  Once your gut/intestines are stable, then you try adding a food back in to see what happens.

Day 60 (Thursday)

 177.4

Yesterday was a day with better self control.  I had a shake for breakfast.  Lunch was a grilled cheese with a slice of tomato.  I didn't stop at any fast food restaurants. I had a Picky Bar to tide me over for supper because we had to leave for Vespers before the Wednesday night spiritual discussion group.  I had a bowl of wheat Chex with strawberries and milk when we got home and one handful of peanut M&Ms.

As days go, that wasn't so bad.  I also closed all the rings for activity and exercise.

Khione is OUT of remission.  So we stopped the CHOP protocol since it doesn't keep the lymphoma at bay any longer.  I'm glad to see the end of Vincristine, which is the "A" of the A-B-A-C cycle as it tends to create the most disruption in her digestion/appetite.

Instead, we're doing something different that is only administered every three weeks, plus prednisone. Yay for prednisone!  I could probably go back in records that have yet to be filed and find out how that worked for Chariclo... Actually... I have it in email.

I found the discharge reports for Chariclo.  This protocol did not go well.  But Khione is a different dog and in a different state relative to the lymphoma.  Last Thursday she didn't feel great and I noticed one of her lymph nodes in her jaw/cheek/throat area was enlarged.  I gave her prednisone then and she bounced back.

Today, I took all three for a walk in the woods with a couple other dogs, and Khione was completely fine -- full speed ahead, leading the way as we started out.  I didn't witness her bowel movement, and she didn't want HER breakfast, especially, but she begged for treats throughout the walk and she stole Mary's toast. I gave her anti-nausea meds.

She is six years, five months and 17 days old.  She weighs 74.4 lbs.  So bizarre to think of her as being about 25 pounds less than Kepler.

Meanwhile... Today's food was two pop tarts for breakfast, salad with leftover pork from the Thai restaurant, and a 190-calorie cocoa almond butter biscuit.  I'm nursing a cup of tea in lieu of having any caffeine pills in my drawer.  I'm thinking supper is either veggie burgers with cheese or fake chicken patties on rolls.

Tonight we're going to the Manhattan Short Film Festival at the Shalin Liu, "forcing" Gillis to take the later train since we won't be able to pick him up after class.  He starts work next weekend if he can figure out all the paperwork.

The one thing about this new protocol means I have more time on Wednesdays.  I need to spend time in my home office dealing with things.  Lots and lots of things.

Day 57 (Monday #9)

 Weight was 178.4.

Tons of stuff going on.  Including my birthday last Friday during which I had the opportunity to eat many lovely things, starting on the Thursday.  And I did!

And before that, we went to the Highland games and had fried dough and ate at a Mexican restaurant where I had a cheeseburger and then a pasta place.

And I got so discouraged that I just decided to ENJOY cereal with strawberries/blueberries/bananas.  The only problem is that there is something about that which then "forces" me to want something MORE -- like another bowl of cereal. This morning, I followed it with an English muffin with spread.

WHATEVER.

At work, I had leftovers from Friday -- scallops with lemon cream sauce over pasta.  A lovely reasonable amount.  I had a Kind bar before... And a Picky bar after.  And Kombucha throughout the day. And then a birthday cupcake from last Thursday.

Supper is going to be something called Chakchouka... Just without the Chile pepper, thank you very much.

If you're curious, it's HERE.

Headed to the grocery store first.

Yesterday, without "exercising," I closed all my rings WAY over.  On my feet 18 hours.

Day 44 (a Tuesday, after Monday #7)

 175.4.

Well, that's SOMETHING.

This morning I had a big bowl of bran flakes with strawberries and milk.  SO yummy.  SO totally worth every delicious mouthful. 'Cause WTH.  Food should be enjoyed, right?

Then, I had a dark chocolate, almond & coconut bar on the way to work.  Followed by a Kombucha drink I've been nursing all day.  Lunch was a 180 calorie microwavable dinner followed by a Picky bar.

Dinner tonight is tofu, coleslaw veggies and either rice or soba noodles with teriyaki sauce.

========

I want to bring something to church tomorrow because it's Liturgy which means hungry people.  I saw this recipe in my FaceBook feed:

Butternut Squash Pasta Salad with Brussels Sprouts, Pecans & Cranberries

So, I have all the ingredients prepped and ready to go and plan to make it tonight so it's ready for tomorrow... WHILE I'm in a Zoom call.  AFTER tai-chi.

Tomorrow morning I need to drop Khione off for chemo and then either wait and then take her with me to riding, or else drive to riding, then return to pick her up.  THEN, I might have a window in which to bathe Kepler.  GOD help me!  And then I have a 2 PM Zoom call.  And then it'll be time to leave for church.  Liturgy is in celebration of the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross.

That brings us to Thursday.  Are you keeping up?

Actually.  Now that I think about it, I might be able to just wait and wash Kepler on Thursday morning.  I thought I needed to get on the road to go see D at college, but now he is informing me that he along with OTHER PEOPLE are not available until 5 PM.  Now, this is dreadfully inconvenient, but because this suggests that he is meeting people, talking to people, attempting to connect with people, then GOL-DARNIT-ALL, I will present Kepler for socializing at 5 PM.

I just need to wait and see when Kepler's breeder wants to try and connect.  We had originally planned for 2 PM, but that leaves me with a good long time to sit around if D doesn't want to see us until 5 PM.  I may get some good relaxing in.  Certainly it will make for some good one-on-one training time with Kepler.

But then I'm stuck in traffic trying to get home from the college.  And AFTER that, we're supposed to drive to Lincoln, NH.  Hmmm.  Whatever.  All that matters is that possibly D is settling in and making friends.  AND HOW TOTALLY AWESOME IS THAT?!

Day 39 (Thursday)

And back to 177.0.  I think yesterday was 176.4.  It's SO ANNOYING.  Yesterday I closed all my rings just living my life (including horseback riding).  I closed at least my activity ring every day last week.  Grrr.

This morning I used a very ripe banana and made a microwave muffin of sorts -- one banana, 3T of pancake mix, one egg, a dash of vanilla, a handful of pecans, a handful of chocolate chips, and a splash of milk.  Microwave for a while.  Ate it.  VERY filling.

I've already doubled my exercise ring for the day, walking in the heat of the woods, sweating up a storm. I only took Kepler and Boreas with me to walk with Seneca and her mom since Khione had chemo yesterday and it just felt like she shouldn't try to do that walk, as much as she totally would have.  Lots of kisses before and after.

Today's frozen dinner is especially yummy. Flavorful but not too spicy.

There's church tonight -- celebrating the birth of Mary, mother of Jesus.  So fasting from lunch onwards. I made a Mac-and-cheese to bake at church and plan to bring hotdogs for anyone who wants to have supper afterwards.

💩 means the number might be 176+.

Day 37 (Tuesday, sailing past Monday #6)

174.6!  Yay!  Bet it was all the stair climbing at college.  And that I basically had breakfast and then nothing much else yesterday.

This morning was a good walk in the woods with dogs plus Seneca and her mom.  Lots of mud and sweat. I've had a 90 calorie Clearly Canadian, a banana (100 cal?) and a Picky Bar (200 cal).  Working on 4-cal Spindrifts now.  And I have a 180-cal microwaveable dinner for lunch.  There.  That's out of the way.

Saturday was committed to final getting ready and packing D for college.  Went to the dump.  Dropped John's cassock at the dry cleaners. Took D to the bank to sort out his online access.  Only 50% successful as I think the system was just totally confused with all the trying.  Even the customer service person at the bank finally gave up and suggested we just give it a day and try again.  Meanwhile, at least we got his ATM card activated and tested.  Took him to buy a back-up pair of shoes.  Loaded the car.  To the roof. We didn't have to jam it TOO full, but it was completely full.  Locked it up and called it done.

Over the last few days we watched the entirety of the brand new Netflix series "One Piece"...

It was lighthearted and fun and D was even able to "tolerate" it so we all watched it together.  A really special way to spend our last entertainment hours.  We started the final episode in the car, on my phone, while we waited in line for our turn to unload D's stuff, and then later, after getting him pizza for lunch, we watched the end of the episode, while parked in the car.  There was a feeling of "okay, there, now we can head off to our separate adventures the way these guys were heading off to theirs."

The college was AMAZINGLY efficient.  We were also lucky to have a 9 AM assigned time for drop off and we were early.  So the wait in line was not long, and then when we pulled up for our allotted five minutes to unload, older students swarmed the car and put everything into three giant wheelie bins.  John drove the car to the assigned parking and took the free shuttle back.  Meanwhile, the students helped us push the bins to the next line and then into elevators and then into the room.  All lines were short and quick.  (Later in the day we observed the line wrapping around the building, but by then we were done, done, done!)

Once we emptied a bin, we just put it in the hall and students came and took them away.  They also staggered the arrival time of the roommate, so by the time he showed up an hour later, we were able to get out of their way and let him and his parents have the room to set up his side.

Here's the car, loaded up... D drove, so John has to sit in the backseat.
His co-piloting is NOT appreciated! 🤣

Here he is, taking advantage of his last chance to drive for a while.

Closest area... Could use a tension rod and a curtain, maybe.

Desk and bed with pod installed.
Space between the two might just fit a little shelf/table I saw at Target,
if it turns out to be desired.

View from his window.

D relaxing.  He doesn't do this at home!  This is downstairs in a lounge area.

There were twice as many drawers provided as I expected, which worked out well.  Storage for towels and pants.  And then there's space behind the drawers, which pull out, for his sea chest (which contains his extra sheets and towels) and his suitcase. FYI, we don't recommend buying the "room in a bag" sets for which they bombard you with advertisements.  Stuff is cheap and a lot of stuff you don't need.  The "underbed storage bags" were good for packing and transporting but not needed afterwards.  The over-the-door shoe bags which ARE good for organizing toiletries, etc. were useless because NO door (other than the main one into the room).  Fabric cubbies for attaching to the closet rod weren't needed because 1) no rod and 2) no space after clothes hung and fridge installed.  So that stuff all came home.  And the sheets are polyester.  Ick.

We spent about six hours with him from arrival to departure on Sunday.  After sorting his room, we left so the roommate could do his thing, went to Target and got a few things (the only thing forgotten was the shampoo bottle he left in the shower at home), and then got lunch.  Finished the "One Piece" episode in the car.  Lugged his fizzy water supply up five flights of stairs (elevators were for wheelie bins only on this day).  Then went looking for classrooms which we unfortunately in locked buildings. Climbed the stairs one more time so I could grab a couple of pictures.  And then it felt like it was okay to leave.

We had a room in New Bedford for the night.  It just felt right to me that we stay in case there was something needed that we could supply.  We went to the Glass Museum which was located in the basement of an old mansion that had been converted to special occasion uses, an eating club and many apartments.  Both the gentleman who told us about the mansion and the one who gave us a detailed tour of the glass in the basement were phenomenal.  I love when someone will explain what is interesting about what I'm looking at.  When New Bedford was done with whales, they did glass.  Nowadays, the city is pretty rundown.  Not ALL bad, by any means.

Yesterday morning we had to really hunt to find somewhere for breakfast.  We and the entire world found the one place open on Labor Day... Mirasol's Cafe.  My breakfast tortilla was yummy and filling enough to last all day.  The only problem with John's was it was filled with molten hot lava (aka cheese).

While we were waiting, we finally heard from D to learn that we could go see him now that whatever rah-rah-sis-boom-bah activity he had been at was done.  Amazing!  He hadn't been sleeping!  He wasn't a fan, of course, but he DID get up and go!  Once classes begin, this whole experience has the possibility of improving 1000-fold.  So, we went and hung out (as above) for an hour and then we left.

(Meanwhile, I have eaten my lunch plus a handful of almonds.)

At home, John's mom had been busy cleaning and sorting in D's room.  MORE bottles of juice and fizzy water were unearthed.  I had taken a dozen to the transfer station on Saturday.  I went through antique art examples, some going back to 5-6th grades, and stored them away in a container D uses for historical art.  I retired one piece and used the frame for a new piece I found:

The plan is for D to be able to settle down into his room when he returns to work on his painted figures with all the equipment organized and at hand.  The exciting bit for me is that I great a break from it being all over my kitchen.  I miss him desperately, but there are a FEW benefits!  ;-)

When I got done satisfying SOME of Mary's requests for aid, I went and sorted out D's schedule.  He had asked me to put it together for him in a neat and understandable format.  Based on my experience with three different colleges and their systems, I do not blame him in the slightest or feel like I'm helicoptering by providing this support.  And I'm glad I did as the beginning research I had done while there was not 100% correct.  The last thing D needs is to show up at the wrong place at the wrong time.  So I prepared a very clear schedule of classes, times, locations and professor websites.  It's still on him to find those locations.  Then I put together a list of student resources plus a list of links to clubs that might interest him.

My next plan is to possibly see him a week from Thursday while trying to coordinate visiting Kepler's breeder while we plan ahead for a possible future show.

Day 33 (Friday)

So, I was 177.4 for a couple of days and 177.0 today.

We are definitely in full blown panic and stress-out and scream mode as we get D ready for departure.  I literally lost his debit card five separate times in the space of ten minutes while trying to get him online access (fail).  Also, the bloody thing doesn't work at the ATM machine.

Backup plan -- I put the Apple Card on his phone and I can always pay off anything he spends from his account.  Not that he EVER buys anything.  And I mean E-V-E-R.  NEVER.

Sorted out his online access to his calculus book which turns out to not be a specific book but a subscription service so now I guess he waits for the professor to tell him which exact book.

G still doesn't have a final grade showing up for his class.  Sent an email about that last night.

This morning I had a bowl of cereal with blueberries and strawberries.  Then I had a banana.  THEN I ate a Picky Bar.  Working on a Spindrift.  Have a frozen dinner to heat up for lunch.

BEST thing is that my bestest friend in the whole wide world is coming to visit me this afternoon!
